Jackson Hole, Grand Targhee, or Snow King for a Family Ski Week?

Jackson Hole Mountain Resort is famous for being steep. Here's how families with beginners make it work, and when it's worth driving over the pass instead.

Jackson Hole Mountain Resort (Teton Village)

JHMR has some of the hardest in-bounds terrain in the country and only a handful of green runs. It also has the most polished ski school in the area. Kids' lessons for ages 7 and up run out of Solitude Station, two minutes up the gondola, with its own lunch room.

Lessons don't have a waitlist, and lift tickets can sell out on peak days, so buy lift access when you book the lesson. If full-day tickets are gone, there's a 12-to-4 half-day ticket.

If you have an Ikon or Mountain Collective pass, you'll need a reservation at JHMR this season. The full Ikon Pass includes Jackson, but the Base and Session passes don't (JHMR Ikon page, Outpost JH).

Grand Targhee (Over Teton Pass in Alta, Wyoming)

This is where locals send true beginners. It has a dedicated learning area, and the Start Me Up package bundles a lesson, rentals, and a beginner lift ticket at 25% off, with three kids per instructor for ages 6 to 12. The catch is driving Teton Pass on a stormy morning (see our arrivals guide).

Snow King (Right in Town)

Snow King is small, cheap, and rarely crowded, with a magic carpet for the little ones. It's perfect for a half day when your kids just want to slide.

What We'd Do With Our Girls

Base the family near JHMR if anyone in the group is a strong skier. Put first-timers on the beginner ticket or in lessons, and spend one day at Targhee. Reserve rentals online to save money, then pick them up after 3 p.m. the day before or have them delivered to the house.

Driving to Targhee means Teton Pass, so check the arrivals guide. For an off-mountain day, see storm days with kids.

Ski questions

Is Jackson Hole good for beginner skiers?

It can be. JHMR sells a beginner-only ticket for the Teewinot and Eagle's Rest lifts and the Sweetwater Gondola mid-station, and kids 7 and up take lessons at Solitude Station. Many locals send true beginners to Grand Targhee.

Does the Ikon Pass work at Jackson Hole?

The full Ikon Pass includes Jackson Hole with reservations required for 2026–27. The Ikon Base and Session passes do not.

Is Snow King good for little kids?

Yes. It is small, in town, rarely crowded, and has a magic carpet.
