I. Picking Your Airport
Most families fly straight into Jackson Hole Airport (JAC). It's the only commercial airport inside a U.S. national park, so your first view of the Tetons happens before you reach baggage claim. Town is about 20 minutes away. This winter (2026–27) there are nonstops from Atlanta, Boston (Saturdays, February 13 to March 20), Chicago, Dallas, Denver, Houston, Los Angeles, Minneapolis, Newark, Salt Lake City, San Diego, San Francisco, Seattle, and Washington Dulles.
If the fares into JAC are painful, look at Idaho Falls (IDA). It's about 90 miles away, roughly an hour and 45 minutes on a clear day, and often a good bit cheaper. The Salt Lake Express bus makes the run twice a day if you'd rather not drive.
Salt Lake City is about four and a half hours by car. That works for a big group with a rented van and an easy first day. If someone in your group is hoping to ski the afternoon you land, Salt Lake is the wrong airport.
II. Flying In When It Snows
JAC rarely closes, but on a heavy snow day each airline decides flight by flight whether to land, cancel, or divert. Pilots and locals on the ski forums all say the same thing: the bigger Delta and United jets usually make it in, and the small regional jets are quicker to turn around. A morning arrival gives you more chances than an evening one.
Going home, give yourself a long connection or book a nonstop. Saturday is changeover day for most of the valley, and the de-icing line can get long.
If your flight does divert, it will usually land in Idaho Falls, Salt Lake City, or Bozeman. It helps to know how you'd get to Jackson from each one before you need to.
III. The Two Roads From Idaho
Teton Pass (WY-22) is the short way, through Victor and Wilson. It's steep, and it closes on short notice for avalanche work. Most closures last a few hours, but one February storm shut it for five days. The 2024 landslide that took out a section of the road was fully repaired by June 30, 2025. Check WYDOT's road report the morning you drive.
The long way runs through Swan Valley and Alpine, then up the Snake River Canyon. It's about 85 miles, and in the kind of weather that closes the pass, plan on two to three hours.
One new rule matters for big groups. Starting October 1, 2026, any vehicle rated at 10,000 pounds or more, any RV, and anything pulling a trailer needs a driver with the yearly WY22 Safe Pass self-certification to cross Teton Pass (WYDOT announcement). A lot of 12- to 15-passenger Sprinter vans fall in that class. Ask your van company whether its drivers are certified. If they aren't, you're going through Alpine.
IV. Cars, Vans, and the Bus
Rental SUVs at JAC sell out over Christmas, Presidents' Day, and July, so book the car the same day you book flights. All-wheel drive helps you get moving, but snow tires are what help you stop, and most rental fleets run all-season tires. Ask the counter for a car with winter tires, or rent from a winter specialist like Winter Wagon.
The START bus is free inside the Town of Jackson. A ride out to Teton Village is $3 each way, and kids 8 and under ride free with an adult (START fares). Last winter START also tried out a $10 airport shuttle. Check whether it's running again before you count on it.
Once you land, our grocery and pre-stocking guide covers the first shop, and the best time to visit guide helps you pick the week. Traveling with a big group? Antelope Trails Ranch sleeps 31 across three homes on the Snake River.
Arrival questions
What is the closest airport to Jackson Hole?
Jackson Hole Airport (JAC), inside Grand Teton National Park, about 20 minutes from town.
Is Idaho Falls a good backup?
Yes, if you have a four-wheel drive with good tires or a shuttle booked. It is about 90 miles and an hour and 45 minutes in good weather, over Teton Pass or around through Alpine.
Can our group van drive over Teton Pass?
Since October 1, 2026, vans rated at 10,000 pounds or more need a driver with the WY22 Safe Pass self-certification. Without it, take the Alpine route.
