Ask a local what to do on a storm day and they'll tell you to dress for it and go outside anyway, because the snow is better and everyone else is indoors. That's great advice for teenagers. For the rest of the family, here's what works.
I. Burn Off Energy
The Teton County Recreation Center downtown has a lap pool, a kids' pool with a waterslide, and a climbing wall with rental gear. Mornings are calmer than afternoons. Kids under 8 need an adult in the water with them.
For the littlest ones, KidSpark at Jackson Hole Indoor (3580 South Park Drive) is built for ages 0 to 9, with a bounce house, a climbing wall, a playground, and crafts. Drop-in is $25, and it's closed Sunday mornings.
II. Hands-On
The Jackson Hole Children's Museum on Mercill Avenue is hands-on STEAM play for little kids and grade-schoolers. It's open Tuesday through Saturday (some Sundays) and closed Mondays.
The National Museum of Wildlife Art sits on the hill across from the Elk Refuge, so in winter the real elk are right outside the windows. The Jackson Hole History Museum has artifacts kids are allowed to touch, but it closes for part of November, so check first. And the Teton County Library is free, warm, and has a great children's section for a quiet hour.
III. Weather-Proof Outdoors
Astoria Hot Springs is 20 minutes south on the Snake River, with four hot pools and a children's pool about two feet deep. Soaking while the snow falls is the whole point. Sessions sell out, so book ahead. It's closed Wednesdays, and dogs aren't allowed, even waiting in the car.
The National Elk Refuge sleigh ride takes you out among thousands of wintering elk for about an hour. The 2026–27 season runs December 19 to April 3, and rides go out in the snow. Blankets aren't provided, so bring your own. Rides leave from 532 North Cache Street.
Refuge Road is free and right at the edge of town. From fall through spring, look for bighorn sheep on Miller Butte (USFWS).
