When Is the Best Time to Visit Jackson Hole With Kids?

Snow, park roads, restaurant closures, and crowds, month by month, so you can pick the week that fits your family.

Guide article

December to March: Snow Season

This is skiing, the Elk Refuge sleigh, and soaking at Astoria while it snows. Inside Yellowstone, you can't drive your own car in winter. It's snowcoach or snowmobile only, from about mid-December to mid-March. Christmas, New Year's, and Presidents' Day sell out first: lessons, rentals, cars, all of it.

April: The Quiet Window

The mountain closes in early April and the car-free Teton Park Road opens to bikes and walkers. Plenty of restaurants close from mid-April to mid-May, so check Dishing JH before you count on dinner out.

May: The Valley Wakes Up

The Teton Park Road opens to cars on May 1, and in 2026 Yellowstone's South Entrance opened May 8 (NPS road status). Bears and baby bison are out. It can still snow, so pack layers.

June to August: Peak Season

Long days and warm(ish) lakes, but parking at Jenny and String lakes fills early (our Grand Teton guide has the plan). Afternoon thunderstorms are common, so save big hikes for the morning.

September: The Grown-Up Month

Elk bugle in the park, the aspens turn late in the month, and school is back in session, so the crowds thin out.

October and November: The Off-Season

Restaurants close in waves and Yellowstone's roads close in early November. In 2026, part of the Moose-Wilson Road is closed for construction through November 15 (NPS). Grand Targhee opens its 2026–27 ski season November 20.

If We Had to Pick

For little kids, late June or a February week that isn't Presidents' Day. For a multigenerational group that wants wildlife without the crowds, September.

Picking a ski week? Start with Jackson Hole, Grand Targhee, or Snow King. Summer trip? Read how to beat the parking clock at the lakes.
