Feeding a big group in a mountain town is honestly half the work of the trip. Here's how locals shop, and how we'd handle it with our own crew.
I. Where to Shop
Locals will tell you Smith's is usually the cheapest of the big stores in town. Albertsons on Buffalo Way is open 6 a.m. to 11 p.m. every day, does delivery and DriveUp pickup, and has a pharmacy and a deli that can make party trays. For specialty items, there's Whole Foods on South Highway 89.
Near the Town Square, Pearl Street Market is a small grocer with a good deli, and it sells wine and spirits from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. If your house is on the Teton Village side of the valley, Aspens Market in Wilson has a full-service butcher and saves you the drive into town.
II. The Costco Question
There's no Costco in Wyoming. The closest is Costco Idaho Falls, about 90 miles away. If your group flies into IDA, that's your stop for cases of water, snacks, and breakfast for twenty before you head over the pass.
III. Stocking the House Before You Land
Walking into a full fridge after a travel day is a gift, and two local services will do the shopping for you: Jackson Hole Grocery Delivery and Mountains of Groceries. Both post their pricing, so read it before you send a list. For a big group, a percentage-based fee adds up quickly on a large order. Sometimes the better trade is Albertsons delivery for the basics, plus one adult doing a Smith's run on day one.
IV. Alcohol
Licensed grocery stores in Wyoming can sell beer, wine, and spirits, and Sunday sales are allowed. The big stores in town will cover most of what your group needs.
V. Cooking at Altitude
Jackson sits at 6,237 feet, where water boils at about 200°F instead of 212°F. Pasta and potatoes take longer, and boxed brownies and cakes need the high-altitude directions on the side of the box (we learned that one the hard way). The air is dry, too, so keep water bottles out on the counter where the kids will see them.
VI. A Night In
For the big group dinner, ask your host which private chef they like. A house that hosts groups usually has someone they trust. We'll add our own favorites here after we've hosted families with them.
