Emergency care from Cruz Bay to St. Thomas

St. John has no hospital. For a group at Valhalla in Catherineberg, the clinic is in Cruz Bay. Surgery and intensive care are a boat ride away, at Schneider Regional Medical Center on St. Thomas.

I. Cruz Bay

A cut, a fever, or a first look at an injury starts on St. John. Call 911 for an emergency. Do not drive a serious injury down the North Shore road yourself.

II. The boat to St. Thomas

EMS runs an ambulance boat from Cruz Bay to St. Thomas. That is the path for a patient who needs surgery or intensive care.

    From the house, call 911. Say Valhalla, Catherineberg, above Cinnamon Bay, on the North Shore of St. John.

    Myrah Keating Smith, or straight to the boat

    EMS on St. John decides. Some patients go to Myrah Keating Smith in Susannaberg to be stabilized. Others go straight to the ambulance boat.

    Schneider Regional, St. Thomas

    The ambulance boat crosses to St. Thomas. A second crew takes the patient to Schneider Regional Medical Center in Charlotte Amalie. One family member should ride along, with the ID and the insurance card.

III. Prescriptions

Chelsea Drug Store is in The Marketplace in Cruz Bay. Call 340-776-4888. Weekdays run 8:30 AM to 6:30 PM. Saturday is 9 AM to 5 PM. Sunday is closed. Call ahead on a holiday.

Bring the medicines you take, plus extra days, in a carry-on. Do not put them in checked luggage.
